Fifty Shades of IPA…BAD Co. at the Winter Ales Festival
If you’re reading this after a heavy weekend at the Winter Ales Festival in Derby, congratulations! You have survived the challenge laid down by our most bitter of beers, the fearsome Mea Culpa!
Taking a glimpse at the BAD Co. repertoire on show at Derby might have been a rather daunting experience for the session drinkers amongst you. We went armed with only our strongest selection of superb Yorkshire ales.
Dazed & Confused, our trademark milk stout, provided its usual attributes of lovely smooth chocolate, hints of coffee and cherry and a mouth-watering almond finish. Fruit+Red=Fred, our red spiced ale packed with gorgeous spice, was a delightful winter-warmer, ideal for those coming in from the February cold!
As well as these 5% beauties, two double-IPA’s laid down the gauntlet for the most daring of drinkers.
Our oak-aged Communication Breakdown, the first of our double-IPA’s, was packed with hops and stood at a staggering 100+ IBU’s. With notes of tangerine and tropical fruits, Communication Breakdown’s citrus-bite with hints of bourbon was a winner with the hardcore beer crowd. Unfortunately, this little gem has served its time at BAD Co. for the time being, but rest assured it will return in the future – we just love it too much!
Though Communication Breakdown was a hit with the bitter fans, our limited edition IPA, Mea Culpa (Latin for ‘My Mistake’) made Communication Breakdown look like kids-play! Bombarded with hops, this pale ale hit a massive 300+ IBU’s! Our attempts to warn the drinkers of the sky high bittering units – through the use of the ‘hazardous chemical’ style pump-clip – went unnoticed and you hardy hop lovers despatched Mea Culpa with ease!
One thing’s for sure, you guys just love hops!
Thanks to all who came along to the NWAF and tried our beers. We had a blast!
For those of you who took on Mea Culpa and crave something with more IBU’s, stay posted!
Something bitter this way comes…
